Susan firmly believes, no matter whether you are a complete beginner, an
intermediate recreational paddler, or someone thinking of moving into
racing, that a good, efficient, forward stroke makes your time on the water
so much more enjoyable, leading paddlers to spend more of the season on the
water, which then becomes a lifetime of joyful paddling.
Ultra-marathon paddler Susan Williams is one of only 7 women solo kayak
paddlers in the world who have completed the 70 mile General Clinton race,
the longest one day race in North America.
In 2006 she became the Pennsylvania women's sea kayaking state champion and
has held that title in New Jersey as well. She has been awarded reserve
champion in Delaware, Maryland and Virginia.
Susan has a comprehensive paddling background. In addition to racing kayaks,
Susan races outrigger canoes, placing first in OC-2 in the prestigious
Blackburn Challenge, the longest open water race in the world. She also
holds a world gold medal in 500 meter dragonboat sprints earned at the
International Dragon Boat Federation World Championships in Rome, Italy.
Susan competes in marathon and ultra marathon kayak races from Key Largo to
Maine. She's taught racing techniques, the forward stroke, and intermediate
strokes and bracing for the Chesapeake Paddlers Association.
